Requires a Chess Board. Deployed inside the Chess Board (not the main backpack), and effects fire each time the piece captures or is captured in the automatic chess match during battle.

Black Pawn is the aggressive counterpart to White Pawn in Mage's chess system. Where White Pawn (Regen + Luck) is defensive, Black Pawn contributes Mana supply + Poison application — feeding offense, damage, and Mana economy. At the same minimum 1G price, its direct synergy with core Mage builds outstrips White Pawn, earning a higher overall rating.

Its biggest strength is the 3 Mana on capture. Mage builds are extremely Mana-dependent: Magic Wand (5 Mana for big damage) and Mana Orb (30 Mana for 12 buffs) constantly hunt for ways to refill Mana. Deploying 4-8 Black Pawns can accumulate 12-24 Mana over an active match — enough to fund 2-5 Magic Wand attacks. Combined with Blueberry (1 Mana every 3.5s), backpack-side Mana generation becomes unshakable.

The 2 Poison on being captured stacks DoT on the enemy. Poison deals damage equal to its stack count per second and decays by 1 per second — a triangular-number scaling. If a full Black Pawn x4 squad is wiped, minimum 8 Poison stacks are applied, dealing 8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1 = 36 extra damage. Combined with Emerald (Poison per 4 Mana gained), Poison supply multi-layers, and even Mage (not just Reaper) can run a legitimate poison strategy.

The chess-build design philosophy is "independent combat power outside the backpack," and Black Pawn drives this line's offensive contribution. Running chess offense in parallel with the trinity set (Wand of Equilibrium + Magic for Dummies + Puzzlebag of Love) becomes an advanced dual-banner Mage build. As a crafting hub for Black Knight (attack upgrade), Black Bishop (debuff upgrade), and Black Rook (balanced upgrade), it also fuels mid-to-late game completion.

• Stockpile roughly the same number as White Pawns immediately after buying a Chess Board. White/black balance activates the chess match
• For Mages running Mana-consuming weapons (Magic Wand, Thunder Staff, Mana Orb), prioritize Black Pawns as a Mana auxiliary
• Poison 2 is not affected by Puzzlebag of Love's +20% healing (it is a debuff). It does, however, stack with Emerald-applied Poison
• Hold into mid game as crafting material for Black Knight / Black Bishop / Black Rook. Upgrades massively enhance effect strength
• Paired with Magic for Dummies, it plugs into the "gain Mana → spend → heal 2 HP" three-step cycle
• When running Mana Orb, Black Pawn's Mana contribution raises Orb detonation frequency
• At 1G, purchase risk is effectively zero. Sale chances can drop it to 0G — free pawn expansion

Mage Chess Mana Economy Build

Chess Board + Black Pawn x4 + White Pawn x4 (eight-piece deploy) massively boosts Mana supply during battles. On top of the Magic Wand + Mana Orb + Wand of Equilibrium Mana-consumption build, Black Pawns add 3 Mana per capture — resolving the Mana bottleneck. Chess cuts into the enemy while the backpack rains Mana-heavy spells.

Mage Poison-Spread Chess

Black Pawn x8 + Emerald armor builds a multi-layer Poison supply. Chess exchanges apply Poison 2 each time a pawn is captured, stacking with Emerald's Poison per 4 Mana gained. Not a Reaper-style poison build, but a grinding strategy that preserves Mage durability while slowly whittling HP.

Mage Upgrade Completion

Stockpile Black Pawn x8 early, then craft three black upgrades (Knight / Bishop / Rook) in mid game. Upgrade white side similarly for a six-piece full chess match. Exchanges per match x upgrade effects reaches the final chess-build form.

Mage Dual-Banner Parallel Build

Trinity set (Wand of Equilibrium + Magic for Dummies + Puzzlebag of Love) as the backpack core + Chess Board + Black Pawn chess axis runs in parallel. Backpack main power + chess supplementary power combine into multi-directional pressure that exceeds the enemy's response capacity.

• Mage-exclusive. Other classes cannot equip
• Without a Chess Board, nothing happens. Solo effect is zero
• Mana 3 only fires on capture. If your chess side is getting wiped without capturing, Mana contribution is zero. Must balance with white pieces
• Poison only fires on being captured. If your chess side dominates and never loses pieces, Poison stops. Paradoxically, a losing chess match stacks more Poison
• Over-stacking Black Pawns breaks the white/black balance and starves both effects of activation opportunities
• Chess builds depend heavily on shop luck. Without a Board or upgrade materials, you stall at the pawn tier with insufficient damage
• Chess combat power is not a replacement for backpack main power. Treat it as supplementary — never neglect the trinity set core
• Poison 2 is DoT-based. Against Poison-immune opponents (Amanita resistance), effect craters
