Complete Beginner's Guide

Class comparison, item placement, and early-game strategy

What is Backpack Battles?

Backpack Battles is an asynchronous PvP auto-battler where you arrange items in your backpack to fight automatically. After Early Access in 2024, the game reached full release (v1.0) in June 2025, with the Engineer class added in April 2026.

Two core mechanics drive everything:

  • Placement puzzle: Strategically place items in a grid-based backpack
  • Synergy design: Adjacent item combinations activate bonus effects to power up your build

Basic Game Flow

  1. Choose a class: Pick one of 7 classes before the run starts
  2. Buy items in the shop: Spend gold to buy items before each round
  3. Arrange in backpack: Place purchased items in the grid (adjacent items trigger synergies)
  4. Auto-battle begins: After setup, your backpack fights the opponent's automatically
  5. Review and improve: Check win/loss and adjust your build for the next round

When HP hits zero, the run ends. The goal is to build a powerful enough loadout to keep winning rounds.

Class Comparison Table

Class Difficulty Rating Playstyle
Ranger ★☆☆ Beginner S Versatile — supports pets, Luck, and melee all at once
Berserker ★☆☆ Beginner A Pure melee, simple high-damage builds
Pyromancer ★★☆ Intermediate S Stack Heat with fire items for burst one-shots
Adventurer ★★☆ Intermediate A Buff stealing and diverse tricky tactics
Reaper ★★☆ Intermediate B Sustained poison and lifesteal damage over time
Mage ★★★ Advanced B Chess piece synergy — deep knowledge required
Engineer ★★★ Advanced A Charge loops and mana for ultra-fast activation (added April 2026)

Recommended for Beginners: Ranger or Berserker

Ranger: The dedicated Ranger Bag Ranger Bag provides consistent bonuses, and many item types (pets, bows, Luck) work well — making the class less dependent on specific shop offerings.

Berserker: Has a clear build axis in Double Axe Double Axe + Anvil Anvil, making it intuitive to know which items to pick.

Backpack Placement Techniques

Understanding Adjacent Synergies

The central mechanic of Backpack Battles is adjacent synergies — items placed next to each other horizontally or vertically trigger bonus effects.

Core rules:

  • Potions → Boost damage of adjacent weapons
  • Weapon + Weapon → Same type increases activation chance
  • Fire items → Adjacent fire items chain Heat
  • Battery (Engineer) → Supplies charge to items directly below

How Crafting Works

Placing certain items adjacent to each other automatically triggers crafting.

Examples:

  • Axe Axe + Axe → Double Axe Double Axe
  • Boomerang + Rope → Daggerang
  • Lucky Clover Clover + Gold Coin → Mega Clover Mega Clover
  • Puppy + Puppy → Grown Dog

Warning: Unintended adjacency can trigger crafting. Think about placement order before placing items.

Placement Priority

  1. Core items near the center: Place key items where they can be surrounded by others
  2. Synergy partners adjacent: Always keep mutually-enhancing item pairs next to each other
  3. Store crafting materials apart: Keep crafting materials separated to prevent unintended crafts
  4. Slow items toward the back: Items with high stamina cost (slow activation) go toward the back of rows

Early Game Strategy (Rounds 1–10)

Rounds 1–5: Set Your Direction

  1. Only take items that fit your class strength
    • Ranger → Bow, dagger, Luck-type items
    • Berserker → Axe, hammer, melee weapons
    • Pyromancer → Fire-type items (torch, flame sword, etc.)
  2. You don't have to spend all gold: Save it for powerful items
  3. Winning battles is the top priority: Focus on a configuration that beats opponents

Rounds 6–10: Lock In Your Build

  1. Craft your core item: Aim for powerful crafted items like Double Axe, Mega Clover, etc.
  2. Have at least one defensive item: Armor, shield, or healing — pick at least one type
  3. Clean up your backpack: Sell useless items to free space and enable efficient placement

Rounds 11+: Aim for Final Form

  1. Finalize your optimal placement layout
  2. Fine-tune with support items: Optimize speed, durability, and special effects
  3. Max 2 shop rerolls: Preserve gold efficiency

Common Mistakes and Solutions

Mistake Cause Solution
Can't buy — no space Poor space management Sell low-activation items
Unintended craft triggers Placed items without checking adjacency Store materials apart; confirm before placing
Gold runs out Overspending or rerolling too much Cap rerolls at 2; prioritize cheaper items
Build doesn't come together Taking too many random item types Commit to class-appropriate items from round 1
Losing streak with no defense Over-focusing on offense Always have at least one armor/shield/heal item

Per-Class Early Item Priorities

Ranger

Ranger Bag Lucky Clover Mega Clover Rat

  • First: Two daggers + secure Ranger Bag
  • Mid: Clover + Gold Coin → aim for Mega Clover
  • Stack multiple Luck passives to raise crit rate

Berserker

Axe Double Axe Anvil

  • First: Two Axes → craft into Double Axe
  • Mid: Get Anvil and place it adjacent to Double Axe
  • Surround Anvil with Hot Coal for maximum synergy

Pyromancer

Chili Goober Dark Lantern Phoenix

  • First: Fire-type items (torch, flame sword) for early combat power
  • Mid: Chili Goober (Heat acceleration) + aim for Dark Lantern or Phoenix
  • Maintain Heat above 40 for maximum damage

Adventurer

Daggerang
  • First: Complete Daggerang (craft Boomerang + Rope) as early as possible
  • Mid: Add Fedora (Luck generation) to increase buff-steal chance
  • Secure Hero's Shield for defense

Reaper

Death Scythe Snake

  • First: Secure two Death Scythes to stack poison counters
  • Mid: Get Snake for HP/Luck boost and poison duration
  • Add Poison Goober to amplify poison damage

Mage

Mana Orb Chess Board

  • First: Mana Orb as top priority, then buy Chess Board immediately
  • Mid: Aim for 2+ White Pawns and 2+ Black Pawns
  • Collect Knight, Bishop, and Rook to build up piece synergies

Engineer (Advanced)

Battery Mana Orb

  • First: Battery + Mana Orb as top priority
  • Mid: Place Automaton at center of backpack when acquired
  • Use Perpetual Engine to establish the mana/stamina circulation loop

Quick Reference: Beginner Action Plan

  1. Start with Ranger or Berserker as your first class
  2. Only collect items that fit your class's strengths
  3. Always be mindful of adjacent synergies when placing items
  4. Limit shop rerolls to 2 per round
  5. Always keep at least one armor, shield, or healing item in your backpack
  6. Craft intentionally — store crafting materials away from each other
  7. After a loss, review your backpack and identify what to improve next time

Backpack Battles rewards experimentation. Don't worry about losing early — try different builds and learn what works.
