Chess Build

Core Mechanic

A signature Mage build that fights by assembling chess pieces on the board. Strength scales with piece variety, and the completed form is top-tier across all builds. Space efficiency is poor, however, and the build is difficult to assemble — a roman build.

Pieces move on the Chess Board and bonuses trigger when they capture opponent pieces. The player must arrange pieces and the surrounding environment to time captures correctly.

Recommended Subclass: Any

Chess does not require a specific subclass. A "masochist" variant pairs it with Harold (Hateful Hat), but normally pick whichever subclass suits your path.

Core Items and Placement

Item Role
Chess Board Class core; piece movement field
White Pawn / Black Pawn Early pieces
White Knight / Black Knight Mid-game pieces
White Bishop / Black Bishop Strong pieces
White Rook / Black Rook Top-tier pieces
Banana / Blueberries Stamina supply

Chess Board is large, taking up most of the bag. Pieces move on the board, so the placement decides capture timing.

Build Order

Early game (Rounds 1-6)

Wait for Chess Board to appear while collecting Pawns and Knights. Chip with Wooden Sword while reserving space for the pieces.

Mid game (Rounds 7-12)

Pick a subclass at Round 8 (any). Center Chess Board and place pieces sequentially. Once Bishops and Rooks line up, piece coordination starts to work.

Late game (Round 13+)

Assemble all 6 piece types on the board and chain captures for bonuses. Multiple pieces move per turn cycle, dismantling the opponent's defense one-sidedly.

Tactics and Positioning

This build requires understanding piece movement and mutual captures. Pieces move per chess rules, so there is real strategy in placement — Pawns at the front to cover Knights, etc. Space efficiency is poor, so trim non-piece items to the minimum.

Difficult Matchups and Counters

  • Opening-rush archetypes: you die before pieces line up. Layer shield + helm early.
  • Buff-strip: removing piece buffs hurts. Counter with Amethyst.
  • High armor: even piece attacks can struggle to pierce. Push Rook's single-hit damage.

Variations

A "masochist" variant pairs with Harold (Hateful Hat) to leverage debuffs. A piece + pet hybrid with Spirit (Spirit Bell) is theoretically possible but space-tight.
