Basic Stats

Stat Value
Type Action
Cost 5
Effect Draw 2 cards.
Set Basic Set

Rating: S

Alchemist does one thing: draw 2 cards. And that one thing is enough to make it S-tier.

In deck-building games, hand size is everything. Every additional card means:

  • More coins available this turn
  • More options to play action cards
  • Better chance of assembling the coronation setup (Large City + 6 coins)

Why S Tier?

Universal Value

Alchemist is equally strong at every game stage. Whether you're in the early economy phase, mid-game buildup, or late-game succession sprint, drawing 2 cards is always advantageous.

Multiplicative Scaling

Two Alchemists in a deck means that when you play the first one and draw 2 cards, you might draw the second Alchemist and immediately chain another +2 draws. This creates exponential hand size growth.

Synergy Multiplier

Card Combination
Stargazing Witch Arrange top of deck, then draw those exact cards with Alchemist
Library Library's action-coin bonus activates when playing Alchemist
Large City / Supply Unit Higher chance of drawing coin cards
Donation A thinned deck means Alchemist draws only your best cards

Strengths

  • Pure versatility: Works in any deck archetype
  • Stack synergy: Each additional copy multiplies value
  • Consistent across all game phases: Never becomes dead weight

Weaknesses

  • Cost 5 is steep early: Requires some economy building first
  • No direct coin production: Depends on deck quality — weaker in unbuilt decks

Recommended Copies

Copies Assessment
1 Nearly always worth buying
2–3 Core of engine-focused builds
4+ Alchemist-chain specialized build

Summary

Alchemist's "draw 2" is the most universally applicable effect in the game. Once you can afford cost 5 consistently, buying Alchemist should be among your top priorities.
