Basic Stats
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | Territory |
| Cost | 6 |
| Succession Points | 3 |
| Effect | Coin 3. Cannot Keep. At Cleanup, auto-sets to Domain if you have one. |
| Set | Basic Set |
Rating: S
Margrave is the most efficient succession card in the game. At cost 6, it provides:
- 3 succession points (same as Senator at cost 5, but Margrave also generates coins)
- 3 coins when played (equal to Metropolis)
- Auto-set mechanic: Can't Keep it, but it automatically sets itself at Cleanup if you have a Domain
Why Auto-Set Is Not a Drawback
"Cannot Keep" sounds bad. But Margrave auto-sets at Cleanup into your Domain — so unless you're buying it before coronation (before you have a Domain), it's functionally free to keep.
Efficiency Comparison
| Card | Cost | Pts | Coins | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Margrave | 6 | 3 | 3 | Auto-sets |
| Duke | 8 | 6 | 0 | Pure succession |
| Senator | 5 | 3 | 0 | No bonus |
| Metropolis | 6 | 0 | 3 | Pure economy |
Margrave's unique position: Produces the same coins as Metropolis while also generating 3 succession points. No other card achieves this dual purpose.
Synergies
| Card | Reason |
|---|---|
| Metropolis | Stack economy — Metropolis + Margrave for 6 coins each turn |
| Klam Klam (Princess) | Cost drops to 5 — even easier to acquire |
| Library | Draw engine helps find Margrave consistently |
| Imperial Crown | Margrave + Crown creates a winning score combination |
Summary
Margrave belongs in every single deck. 3 points + 3 coins for 6 coins is an objectively excellent deal. Buy 2–3 copies whenever possible — they pay dividends in both succession races and economy generation.
