Balatro Beginner's Guide: Basics and Early-Game Play
What is Balatro
Balatro is a poker-based roguelike deckbuilder. You score points with poker hands and must beat the minimum score demanded by each round's blind. Jokers, Tarots, Planet cards and more are used to push your score higher and higher.
Chips and Mult
Scoring in Balatro is decided by "Chips × Mult." Understanding those two concepts is the first step in learning the game.
- Chips: the base value derived from the poker hand and the ranks of the scoring cards
- Mult (multiplier): the value multiplied onto Chips. There are additive Mult and multiplicative XMult
- Final Score = (base Chips + added Chips) × (base Mult + added Mult) × XMult
Because XMult is applied last, stacking multiple XMult effects makes the score explode exponentially.
Early-Game Play
Antes 1–3: Commit to a direction
Early antes are about locking in the shape of the deck. Keep these in mind:
- Narrow down to one or two main poker hands (Flush, Straight, pair-based, etc.)
- Focus Planet card upgrades on those hands
- Use Tarots to destroy unneeded cards and thin the deck
Picking jokers
Priority order when picking jokers early:
- XMult jokers (Hologram, Steel Joker, etc.) — top priority when you see them
- High flat-Mult jokers (+4 or more) — reliable scoring floor
- Economy jokers (Golden Joker, The Egg, etc.) — they widen your shop options
Managing money
- Every $5 you hold generates $1 of interest at the start of the next round (capped at $5 per round)
- Keep $25 or more whenever possible to earn max interest
- That said, when a strong joker shows up, spending through your interest line is often the right call
Why Deck Thinning Matters
The starting deck is 52 cards, but removing cards raises the odds of drawing the ones you actually want.
- Tarots like Death and The Tower destroy or transform cards
- Keep only the cards you want to upgrade
- Aim to compress below ~30 cards for consistency
Using the Shop
- Use rerolls in the shop every round
- Vouchers appear one per ante. Overstock and Reroll Surplus are great early picks
- Tarot Packs and Celestial Packs offer strong value for their cost
Common Mistakes
- Not filling every joker slot: always aim to use all five
- Spreading between too many hands: focusing on one or two scores better
- Skipping deck thinning: a 52-card deck can't keep up with late-ante scaling
- Ignoring interest entirely: holding $25 early compounds into a big advantage
