Understanding Joker Synergies
To hit high scores in Balatro, you need to evaluate jokers not in isolation but as part of a synergistic system. The ideal composition has three elements: a chip source, a scaling mult source, and an XMult source. When all three come together, Chips and Mult compound multiplicatively and the score skyrockets.
Why XMult Is Dominant
XMult is applied last in the scoring formula, so it magnifies everything else. From Ante 7–8 on Gold Stake and above, clearing without at least one strong XMult joker is extremely difficult.

Top 5 Joker Combos
1. Baron + Mime
Baron grants X1.5 Mult for each King held in hand. Mime re-activates held-card effects on scored cards, so a King scored with Mime active triggers Baron twice per King. With four Kings in hand, the theoretical XMult reaches X1.5 to the 8th power — over 25×.
Recommended deck: Black Deck (+1 joker slot)
2. Fortune Teller + Steel Joker
Fortune Teller gains +1 permanent Mult each time you use a Tarot card. Steel Joker gives X0.2 Mult per Steel Card (created by Temperance Tarot) in the full deck. Spamming Tarots grows both additive Mult and XMult simultaneously — a two-for-one engine.

3. Midas Mask + Vampire
Midas Mask converts face cards to Gold Cards when played. Vampire strips all enhancements from scored cards and permanently gains +0.1 XMult per enhancement consumed. Flow: Midas converts J/Q/K → Gold Cards, then Vampire devours those enhancements to stack XMult.
Caution: Vampire consumes enhancements, conflicting with other enhancement-dependent jokers like Steel Joker.
4. Spare Trousers + Square Joker
Spare Trousers gains +2 permanent Mult every time you play a Two Pair. Square Joker gains +4 permanent Chips for every four-card hand played. Two Pair uses exactly four cards, so every Two Pair play grows both jokers simultaneously.
Scaling: Ramp is slow early but becomes overwhelming in mid-game and beyond.
5. Wee Joker + Mass 2s
Wee Joker permanently gains +8 Chips every time a played 2 is scored. A 2 with a Red Seal retriggers, so a single Red Seal 2 triggers Wee Joker twice. Chip scaling can exceed +1000 without much effort.
Best partner: Hologram (adding 2s to the deck also grows Hologram's XMult)

Flush builds shine with the Checkered Deck — only two suits means Flushes are trivially easy to form.

Economy jokers dramatically expand shop options. Golden Joker + Bull together let you afford frequent rerolls and chase the rare jokers that define god-tier runs.

Because XMult is multiplicative, even modest individual values compound aggressively when stacked.
Advanced: Blueprint and Brainstorm
Blueprint copies the joker immediately to its left. Brainstorm copies any one joker's effect. Placed next to a powerful XMult joker, these effectively double or triple its contribution.
Example: Baron → Blueprint → Brainstorm copies Baron's King-hold bonus three times over.
Gold Stake Checklist
- At least one XMult joker by the end of Ante 3
- Primary poker hand leveled to 3+ via Planet cards
- Deck thinned to 40 cards or fewer
- All five joker slots filled
- $20+ cash maintained for reroll budget
