Inventor
Basic Info
- Type: Action
- Cost: 4
- Effect: Gain a card costing up to $4. Until the end of this turn, cards in the Supply cost $1 less.
Rating
Renaissance's "cost-reducing Workshop." Cost 4 gains a card up to $4, and reduces all Supply cost by $1 for the rest of the turn — stacks with multiple Inventors.
Biggest strength: stacking cost reductions. 3 Inventors = -$3, allowing $5 Provinces in the same turn (purchased, not gained, since Inventor is gain-only ≤$4).
Overall A tier. Engine core, especially strong on Potion-less boards.
How to Play
Early: 4-coin top contender vs Workshop / Silver / Witch.
Mid: Chain Inventors to expand deck. Each gains a ≤$4 card.
Late: 3-4 Inventors fired drops Province cost dramatically.
Cost-Reduction Tactics
Stacking:
- Inventor 1: -$1 (Province $7, Gold $5).
- Inventor 2: -$2 (Province $6, Gold $4).
- Inventor 3: -$3 (Province $5, Gold $3).
$5 Provinces are decisive late game. Inventor itself can only gain ≤$4 cards; Provinces still require buy phase.
Key Combos
Inventor + Inventor: Stacked -$2, Province $6.
Inventor + Cargo Ship: Stash gained card.
Inventor + City Gates: +1 hand size raises hit rate.
Inventor + Bridge: Stacked cost reduction.
Inventor + Witch: Gain Witch ($5→$4).
Inventor + Throne Room: TR + Inventor = 2 gains + -$2.
Synergies
- Multiple Inventors: Cumulative cost-down.
- Cargo Ship: Stash gained.
- Bridge: Stacked cost cuts.
- City Gates Project: +1 hand.
- Throne Room: Doubled.
- Witch / Curser: $5→$4 gain.
- Workshop / Remodel: Gain chains.
Counters & Bad Matchups
- Pure Big Money: No Inventor stacking.
- Quick-finish: No time to chain.
- Action-light: Terminal collision.
- No targets ≤$5: Limited gain options.
Advanced Tips
Order matters: each Inventor reduces cost AFTER its own gain. Save the highest-value gain for last after stacked reductions.
Province turn: 3 Inventors → Province $5; buy after Inventor plays.
Note: cost reduction applies to Supply only — set-aside / hand-card costs unchanged.
Avoid terminal collision: Inventor is terminal; pair with Villages or Acting Troupe (Villagers).
