A curse with the Retain keyword. Because it stays in hand instead of going to the discard pile at end of turn, once drawn it permanently eats a hand slot for the rest of combat. It has no extra damage or debuff, but effectively fighting with one fewer card every turn adds up to a large cumulative impact. Unlike Pain (Innate + Retain), it has no Innate, so whether you see it turn 1 comes down to draw luck. It isn't Unremovable, so shops and events can purge it. Given the permanent hand pressure, removal priority runs a little above average.

Sources and Related Events

  • Event "Unrest Site": "Rest" fully heals you but adds Poor Sleep to your deck. The full heal is strong, but the lasting hand-clog from Retain is a real cost. The alternative "Chop Wood" costs 8 Max HP for a random relic
  • Can appear in random curse pools tied to events or relics

Counterplay and Play Pattern

  • Shop removal: 75g+. Recommended reasonably early given the cumulative hand loss
  • Blue Candle: play for 1 HP to Exhaust it. Extremely effective - completely clears the Retain curse
  • Omamori: negates 2 curse acquisitions
  • Deck building: since Retain keeps it in hand, thickening the deck to avoid drawing it doesn't help. Once drawn, you're stuck with it for the whole fight

Good Synergies

  • Blue Candle: Exhaust Poor Sleep for 1 HP. Ideal answer to a Retain curse
  • Fire Breathing (Ironclad): damage on the turn you first draw Poor Sleep. Since Retain keeps it in hand, it doesn't redraw, so the trigger won't repeat
  • Feel No Pain (Ironclad): Block when Blue Candle Exhausts Poor Sleep
  • Darkstone Periapt: +6 Max HP on curse acquisition
