Ironclad

Whirlwind Energy Build

Build Overview

The Whirlwind Energy Build centers on the X-cost card Whirlwind, supported by Bonfire, Bloodletting, and Offering to pour maximum Energy into a single Whirlwind per turn. Whirlwind deals 5 damage x X hits (8 damage x X upgraded) to all enemies, so at X=5+ you output 25-40 damage per hit as AOE - extremely efficient. Layer on Demon Form and Inflame Strength scaling, and the damage compounds exponentially. By late Act 3, a single Whirlwind for hundreds of damage is a realistic outcome.

Tier Rating: A

The Whirlwind + Bonfire + Demon Form triangle is one of Ironclad's strongest synergies, and the longer the fight lasts the more one-sided it becomes - an ideal path to clear the final boss. The challenge in the current meta is that the build hinges on picking up multiple Bonfires, which leans heavily on Relic and card offers. Without the Energy pieces (2-3 Bonfires, Bloodletting, Offering), Whirlwind's X stays low and the finisher falls short. Unlike HP Cost Build's Limit Break-style Strength doubling, or Exude Build's self-driving engine, Whirlwind Energy has no deterministic scaling catch-up, so consistency varies run-to-run. When the pieces come together though, the ceiling is very high.

Key Cards (essential)

  • Whirlwind: An X-cost AOE dealing 5 damage x X hits (8 x X upgraded). The build's core finisher. Damage scales exponentially with Energy, and Strength buffs further boost the output. Upgrade it first - priority number one.
  • Bonfire: A 2-cost Power that grants 1-2 Energy at the start of each turn. Stacking multiple copies lifts your base Energy from 3 to 5-8, permanently pushing Whirlwind's X.
  • Demon Form: A Power that adds 2-3 Strength every turn. Since Strength is applied to every Whirlwind hit, Demon Form on the field late in the fight makes Whirlwind damage skyrocket.
  • Inflame: A 1-cost Power that instantly grants 2-3 Strength. Works faster than Demon Form and raises Whirlwind damage from the early game. Multiple copies are valid.

Candidate Cards

  • Bloodletting: A 0-cost Skill that spends 3 HP for 2-3 Energy. Combined with Whirlwind on the same turn, it jumps Whirlwind's X - the best supplementary Energy source.
  • Offering: An Exude card that spends 6 HP for 2 Energy and 5 draw (upgraded). Digs to Whirlwind and fuels the burst turn's Energy simultaneously.
  • Cascade: An X-cost Skill that plays X cards from the top of your deck. Used with Bonfire-boosted Energy, it deploys a chain of cards at once.
  • Setup Strike (or similar temp-Strength attack): An attack that grants 2-3 Strength this turn. Play it before Whirlwind to layer Strength onto every hit.
  • Rupture: A Power that grants Strength on HP loss. With Rupture on the field, a Bloodletting + Offering turn piles on massive Strength for a super-charged Whirlwind.
  • Challenge Me (Battle Taunt): An attack that also grants 3 Strength (4 upgraded). v0.103.0 buffed the Strength amount, making it even more valuable as a setup-turn card before Whirlwind.
  • Dismantle: An attack that hits twice against enemies with Weak. Apply Weak with Whirlwind first, then follow up with Dismantle for a strong combo.

Recommended Relics

  • Chemical X: Adds 2 to the X value of X-cost cards. A direct, permanent +2 hits on Whirlwind - the single most valuable Relic for this build.
  • Ice Cream: Energy carries over to the next turn instead of being lost. Save unused Energy during Power deployment turns, then dump it all into Whirlwind on the burst turn to maximize X.
  • Lantern: Gain 1 extra Energy at the start of combat. Turn 1 becomes 4 Energy, smoothing the deployment of Bonfire and Demon Form and also directly boosting Whirlwind X.
  • Akabeko (or Strength-doubling Relic): Your first Strength gain per combat is doubled. Inflame's 3 Strength becomes 6, doubling the Strength applied to every Whirlwind hit from early on.
  • Happy Flower: Gain 1 Energy every 3 turns. A steady boost to Whirlwind X, compounding with Bonfire.
  • Burning Blood (starting Relic): Heal 6 HP after combat. Refunds Bloodletting and Offering's HP costs, making the Energy-from-HP plan sustainable long-term.
  • Candlestick (or turn-2 Energy Relic): Gain 2 Energy at the start of turn 2. Pairs naturally with turn-1 Power deployment and turn-2 Whirlwind.

How to Play

Act 1

In Act 1, prioritize Whirlwind, Bonfire, and Inflame. Getting 2+ Bonfires online early radically changes your mid-run Energy. Add 1-2 Inflames to lift early attack damage. Whirlwind is not peak-power in Act 1, but with a single Bonfire you can reach X=4 for solid damage. Take Demon Form the moment it appears. Start using Bloodletting in the later half of Act 1 once HP allows, and get a feel for pushing Whirlwind's X. The Act 1 boss handles well with Inflame + Whirlwind.

Act 2

In Act 2, once you have a second Bonfire, Demon Form, and Bloodletting, per-turn Energy reaches 5-7 and a single Whirlwind outputs 30-50+ AOE damage. Offering solidifies the burst turn setup. Handle Elites with 1-2 Whirlwinds, minimizing HP loss. The longer Demon Form sits, the stronger Whirlwind becomes, so establish a routine: Demon Form early, wait several turns, then finish with Whirlwind. If Cascade appears, adjust the build around the Whirlwind + Cascade combo.

Act 3

In Act 3 the ideal shape - 3 Bonfires, 2+ Demon Forms - is complete, pushing per-turn Energy to 8-10 and X=7-9 Whirlwinds into reality. With Demon Form running 10 turns, Strength reaches 20-30; each Whirlwind hit exceeds 30-40 damage, and X=7 means 200+ AOE damage in a single turn. For boss fights, deploy Bonfire, Demon Form, and Inflame on opening turns, wait for X to peak, then use Offering + Bloodletting to trigger the burst turn and close the fight. The final boss's extended format only benefits Demon Form's compound scaling, so the longer you play, the better.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Multiple Bonfires boost per-turn Energy continuously, giving Whirlwind a natural scaling curve
  • Whirlwind's AOE nature handles multiple enemies, bosses, and Elites alike - excellent versatility
  • Combined with Demon Form's scaling, late-game bursts approach one-shot-kill power
  • Offering and Bloodletting make the burst turn deterministic, so you reliably deliver big damage when it matters

Weaknesses

  • Until the full kit (2-3 Bonfires, Whirlwind, Demon Form) is assembled, damage feels underwhelming
  • Enemies with Energy-reduction debuffs or Whirlwind-disrupting effects leave you with few alternatives
  • Deploying high-cost cards (Bonfire 2, Demon Form 3) forces reactive turns where HP can drop
  • Turns without Whirlwind in hand waste the Energy you generated
  • The build leans heavily on Energy-generating Relics, so consistency varies run-to-run
