Regular gems (Amethyst / Ruby / Sapphire / Topaz / Emerald) change effect by socket location and upgrade through Chipped → Flawed → Regular → Flawless → Perfect for strengthened effects. Lump of Coal is an independent special gem holding only a weapon-socket damage +1 effect. Simple design, but the 70% high proc rate and cheap price give it very high early-game versatility.

Lump of Coal is a special gem granting a permanent +1 damage on weapons for 2G — stable early-game damage booster providing consistent value across every class as a Neutral item. The 70% proc rate rivals even some regular gem effects (e.g. Ruby damage-up), and on high-attack-count weapons it delivers 50-150 cumulative net damage per match. For the 2G price, damage contribution is outstanding — and among early socket-weapon-slot options, the most accessible choice.

For Pyromancer construction, the rating climbs a full grade. Wooden Sword + Lump of Coal crafts Torch, a Heat-granting weapon that becomes the core of fire builds. At 2G + 2G = 4G total, Torch is complete early and the Pyromancer Heat-supply foundation comes together fast. Adding Flame craft further produces Burning Coal (Lump of Coal + Flame), an upgraded gem with Heat grant added. The "damage +1 → Heat-grant gem" development is the Pyromancer fire-build standard from this viewpoint.

In other classes, the basic operation is using it as an early bridge gem. Once a socketed weapon is purchased, insta-socket to boost weapon DPS through the match. From mid game onward, if regular gems (Ruby / Topaz etc.) come in, consider swapping — but regular-gem Chipped versions and Lump of Coal diverge in effect direction rather than sitting in strict upper/lower relation. If pure damage matters, keep Lump of Coal; if special effects (speed / Cold grant etc.) matter, swap.

A caveat: same-type rarity upgrade doesn't work — a major difference from regular gems. Holding multiples cannot produce a "Flawed Lump of Coal," so the basic operation is consumption as material for Burning Coal or Torch. Treat it as a 2G cheap gem, running the cycle "early socket → full-match DPS boost → mid-game craft material."

Pyromancer Torch Fire-Build Early

Wooden Sword + Lump of Coal crafts Torch as fast as possible — Heat-generation weapon becomes the fire-build foundation. Flame mass-stack and Double Axe accelerate surrounding Heat accumulation, scaling smoothly from early to mid game — the standard Pyromancer construction.

Pyromancer Burning Coal Enhanced Gem

Lump of Coal + Flame crafts Burning Coal, securing the enhanced gem with damage +1 + Heat grant on weapon. Socketed onto weapons, it achieves damage increase and Heat supply simultaneously — core gear running the fire economy.

Berserker Whetstone + Coal Double DPS Boost

Heroic Sword (Whetstone x2 + Wooden Sword) + Lump of Coal socket achieves double DPS boost of battle-start weapon +1 and 70% proc damage +1. Establishes a high-damage weapon early, pushing Berserk burst power higher.

Engineer Use-Speed x Tempo Build

Lump-of-Coal-socketed weapon + Battery x3-5 + Swift Gloves achieves use speed +70-100%. 70% proc damage +1 fires an estimated 300-500 times per match under high-speed attacks, overwhelming through cumulative damage.

• In weapon-less builds (pure-mana Mage etc.), effect doesn't fire
• 70% proc is probabilistic, producing variance in short matches

• Crafting to Burning Coal / Torch consumes the material. The socketed Lump of Coal disappears
