Wooden Sword is performance-wise among the weakest weapons in BPB: the cheapest (3G) with the lowest damage tier (1-3). Combat output drastically trails Pan, Broom, and Shortbow among early weapons, and it is not a viable damage source from mid game onward. Its value instead comes from its crafting-hub versatility. Wooden Sword is the starting point of five-plus crafting routes, serving as the "seed" that sprouts into late-game gear.
The most critical route is the Heroic Sword line via two Whetstones — one of the strongest early melee weapons. The long chain of Heroic Sword → Heroic Longsword → Crossblade → Falcon Blade (or the Fortuna's Blessing Bow family) turns a single Wooden Sword into endgame gear. This is the Berserker/Ranger core route.
Pyromancers canonically secure an early Heat-generating weapon via Torch (Wooden Sword + Lump of Coal). Adventurers use Boomerang for a ranged + Luck-generating build, and Mages pick up a Mana-generating totem via Shell Totem (Wooden Sword + Shiny Shell). Reapers can aim for Prism Sword as a multi-element weapon.
In short, Wooden Sword is a universal crafting material worth holding onto regardless of class. It also fills the bag cheaply while you wait for the right material to appear. At 1x2, it is compact enough for easy backpack management.
If you buy one and equip it on the spot, socketing a Chipped Ruby (1G) adds lifesteal that papers over its low damage while you wait to craft. But keeping a Wooden Sword as your main weapon into mid game is a clear-cut loss — commit to a crafting route by Round 3 or 4.

Pitfalls & Cautions
- Standalone power is too low for mid-game usage. Always commit to a crafting route by Round 4-5
- "Just in case" hoarding is fine, but if it squeezes out purchases like Pan, Broom, or gems, you are losing tempo. Prioritize slot management
- Cheap to buy but also cheap to sell — impulse-buying then selling is economically inefficient. Only buy when you have a crafting target in mind
- 1-3 damage has large variance. On a 1-roll, damage contribution is near zero. Escape via socket gems or weapon crafts early
- You cannot use one Wooden Sword across multiple craft routes. Picking one forces you to abandon the others
- Engineer has fewer synergistic craft targets, so Wooden Sword value is lower there. Passing on shop appearances is acceptable
