Rating & Analysis

Chicot contributes nothing to scoring, but it completely neutralises one of Balatro's biggest run killers — Boss Blind effects. Suit debuffs (The Club / The Goad / The Window / The Head), face-card debuffs (The Plant / The Mark), hand-size shrinks (The Manacle), forced selections (Cerulean Bell), no-discard rules (The Water) — all of them get shut off.

From Ante 8 onwards the Showdown Bosses (Amber Acorn, Verdant Leaf, Violet Vessel, Crimson Heart, Cerulean Bell) are also silenced, which makes Chicot arguably the strongest safety net for Gold Stake runs. You also stop needing Director's Cut / Retcon just to reroll a scary boss. The catch is that Chicot takes a Joker slot without adding any score, so getting it to Negative is where its value really explodes.

Rating by Deck

Deck Tier Comment
Ghost Deck S+ Highest access to the Soul card. Directly translates into high-stake stability.
Anaglyph Deck S+ Double Tag doubles up Ethereal Tags for Chicot access, and you no longer need Boss Tags.
Red Deck / Blue Deck A+ Even on safer builds, Chicot is an exceptional high-stake insurance policy.
Painted Deck A+ Joker slots are tighter, but automating boss coverage is worth the slot cost.
Plasma Deck A+ Violet Vessel (x6 requirement) is brutal here, making Chicot's blanket disable especially valuable.

Good Synergies

Joker Why
Blueprint / Brainstorm Since Chicot adds no score, use these to copy a powerful scoring Joker and make up for the lost slot.
Other Soul-pool Legendaries (Canio, Triboulet, Yorick, Perkeo) Same pool. Landing a second Legendary covers the scoring side.
Invisible Joker After a few rounds, clone any Joker of your choice. Duplicate Chicot and aim to make the copy Negative.
Early/mid scaling Jokers (Steely, Swashbuckler-like, Scholar, etc.) Scaling Jokers that often get blanked by bosses now reach Ante 8 safely.
Splash Expands scoring coverage, stacks naturally with the blanket debuff immunity.

Good Cards & Editions

Category Example Why
Edition Negative Frees up a slot while keeping Chicot's passive active. Removes the one real weakness.
Tags Ethereal Tag, Negative Tag Raises Soul access rates and unlocks post-Chicot slot room.
Vouchers Director's Cut → Retcon Useful before you grab Chicot. Becomes redundant afterwards.

Tips & Usage

  • Chicot scores nothing. Aim to pick it up mid-to-late run, ideally from Ante 5–6 onwards when boss RNG matters most.
  • Overkill on low stakes (White–Green). Real value starts from Black Stake upwards where Eternal bosses can end runs.
  • Early on, when slots are tight, don't sell it — actively chase Negative routes via Invisible Joker or Perkeo.
  • It also shuts off score-cap bosses like The Flint (halved base Chips/Mult), The Needle (1 hand only), and The Pillar-type money constraints. Fits any build.
  • Chicot changes how you play before and after the pick-up. If you already own Director's Cut, you can sell it for cash once Chicot is online.

Caveats

  • Remember it is a zero-score Joker. Always keep scoring Jokers running alongside it.
  • Even if you pick it up at Ante 8, it starts working from that Ante's boss (e.g. Amber Acorn). Its real stretch value is for Ante 9+.
  • On Gold Stake, Showdown Bosses appear multiple times per run, so Chicot acts as a long-term insurance policy.
  • If you already hold another Legendary (especially Triboulet or Perkeo), prioritise getting Chicot to Negative.
