No special effect. A basic Ranger-exclusive ranged weapon with one socket. Its quick attack interval lets it contribute through sheer hit count, carrying the early-to-mid game as a core weapon.
Evaluation & Analysis
Shortbow is the baseline Ranger bow and the single most important starter for every Ranger bow archetype. On its own it has no special effect, but the balanced package of a 1.5-second attack interval, reasonable accuracy, and one socket keeps it relevant from the opening rounds through the late game. It also acts as a crafting hub branching into three different builds, so Ranger progression essentially lives or dies by how you use your Shortbow.
If you pick Ranger, any Shortbow that shows up in Round 1 is a top-priority buy. 4G is standard for a Common weapon, and it anchors your hit count from early through mid game. The single socket accepts Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Topaz, or Amethyst, so it flexibly adapts to whichever direction your build takes.
What the community values most is the raw attack speed. At a 1.5s interval (down to 1.07s with Topaz socketed), each arrow is a maximum-value trigger for proc-based gems like Sapphire (Cold) and Emerald (Poison). Proc-dense gems live or die on trigger frequency, so Shortbow functions as "the pedestal that elevates every gem's value."
Late-game progression splits into three routes:
- Arrow → Critwood Staff route: Paired with Acorn Necklace, Lucky Clover, and other Luck/Crit accessories, this maximizes Ranger burst damage
- Falcon Blade route: The attack-speed-focused 2-hit dual-wield core
- Squirrel Archer route: Merges with a Squirrel pet to create a buff-steal + speed pet weapon
Class-by-Class Evaluation
| Class | Rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ranger | S | Starting point for every bow archetype. A mandatory opening-round pick |
(Ranger-exclusive. Other classes cannot equip it.)
Recommended Usage
- For Ranger, buy immediately if a Shortbow appears in Round 1. If it does not, secure one by Round 3 at the latest
- Socketing a Chipped Ruby (1G) dramatically improves early durability — the cost-to-value ratio is superb
- To leverage the fast attack speed, go Sapphire for Cold stacking, Emerald for Poison stacking, or Amethyst for buff-stripping volume
- Socketing Topaz multiplies your own swing rate and catalyzes other weapons as well
- By mid game (Rounds 5-8), craft into Arrow to open the Critwood Staff path. Secure arrows early
- For the Falcon Blade route, use your Shortbow socket short-term and merge as soon as materials line up
- Do not sell a spare Shortbow. Keep it for Falcon Blade crafting or as an extra gem pedestal
Strong Synergies
| Item | Reason |
|---|---|
| Arrow | Essential material for crafting Arrow. The first step of the classic Arrow → Critwood Staff route |
| Acorn Necklace | +5% crit rate per Luck. The Shortbow's hit volume maxes expected crits |
| Lucky Clover | Raises Luck directly, lifting crit rate. An essential accessory for bow builds |
| Sapphire | Maximizes Cold stack rate. Core of the Freeze build |
| Ruby | Early lifesteal, then post-craft attack frequency makes lifesteal healing consistent |
| Emerald | Accelerates Poison stacking. A strong continuous-damage route for volume builds |
| Amethyst | High-frequency buff-strip procs. The go-to pick in anti-buff metas |
| Topaz | Attack-speed boost increases hit count further. A catalyst for other gems |
| Squirrel | Material for crafting Squirrel Archer. A buff-steal pet weapon route |
| Crit Accessories | Stacked with 85% accuracy + 10% crit base to maximize burst |
Build Examples
Ranger Crit Burst Route
Start with Shortbow + Ruby/Sapphire for early durability, then craft into Arrow once you secure the materials. From mid game, upgrade to Critwood Staff and use Acorn Necklace, Lucky Clover, and Quiver to push crit rate into the 60-70% range. Endgame target is Fortuna's Blessing Bow.
Ranger Freeze Volume Build
Run two Shortbows in parallel, socketing Sapphire in each. Stack Cold from the opening, then merge into Falcon Blade in mid game. The 4-socket "Sapphire x2 + Amethyst x2" loadout slows the opponent hard while stripping buffs — a volume-specialized build.
Ranger Squirrel Archer Sub-weapon
Keep Critwood Staff as the main and reserve a sub slot for Shortbow to craft into Squirrel Archer. The pet weapon adds buff steal + speed buffs that complement the main damage line. Pairs well with Acorn Necklace and Quiver.
Pitfalls & Cautions
- Without a special effect, Shortbow alone runs out of damage late. Socket gems or craft upgrades are prerequisites
- 85% accuracy means one in seven shots misses. Single-shot damage is low, so it underperforms in short skirmishes
- Ranger-only, so other classes cannot use it — and other classes cannot even obtain it
- Sell value is low; given its role as crafting material and gem pedestal, selling early-to-mid game is usually a loss
- Spending one Shortbow on Falcon Blade crafting commits you. If you only have one copy, decide between Arrow/Critwood route and Falcon Blade route early
Crafting Results
This item feeds into the following upgrade paths.
| Result | Ingredients | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Arrow | Shortbow + Arrow | A reliable ranged weapon. Next step to Critwood Staff — the classic Ranger route |
| Falcon Blade | Shortbow + feather items + specific materials | 2-hit attack-speed-focused weapon. Core of volume builds |
| Squirrel Archer | Shortbow + Squirrel | Buff-steal + speed pet weapon. A unique off-meta build |
