[Dominion] Grand Market Card Guide - Cantrip Powerhouse
Rating of the Prosperity card Grand Market. Cost 6 Action. +1 Card / +1 Action / +1 Buy / +2 Coin. Cannot be bought with Coppers in play.
Grand Market
Basic Info
- Type: Action
- Cost: 6
- Effect: +1 Card / +1 Action / +1 Buy / +2 Coin.
- Buy restriction: Cannot be bought if you have any Copper in play.
Rating
Prosperity's flagship cantrip action. An upgraded Market (cost 5: +1 Card / +1 Action / +1 Buy / +1 Coin) — Grand Market's +1 Coin → +2 Coin upgrade is huge. The "no Copper in play" restriction means thinned engines only.
Overall A tier. Mid-late engine MVP. Cantrip + Buy + economy in one card is rare and powerful.
The Copper restriction effectively limits Grand Market to thinned decks. BM strategies essentially can't buy it.
How to Play
Early game: Trash Coppers via Chapel / Remodel / Masquerade / Watchtower, then aim for Grand Market. Or hit 6 coin via Silver/Gold and buy on a no-Copper turn.
Mid-game: After engine basis, buy 1-2 Grand Markets per turn. +1 Buy enables parallel purchases.
End-game: Cantrip + +2 coin + +1 Buy is the perfect Province-jump enabler.
Key Combos
Grand Market + King's Court: Triple = +3 cards / +3 actions / +3 buys / +6 coin. Province-jump in one play.
Grand Market + Throne Room: +2 / +2 / +2 / +4.
Grand Market + Bridge: +1 Buy doubled + cost reduction. Provinces at 5 coin.
Grand Market + Goons: +Buy stacking for VP token explosion.
Grand Market + Smithy / Library: Drawing reliability.
Grand Market + Chapel: Trash Coppers to enable Grand Market buys.
Synergies
- Chapel / Altar / Masquerade / Watchtower: Trash Coppers to unlock buys.
- King's Court / Throne Room: Doubled effect.
- Bridge: Cost reduction.
- Goons: +Buy stacking.
- Smithy / Library: Draw stability.
- Peddler: +Buy + +1 Coin.
- Black Market / Festival: +Buy synergy.
Counters & Bad Matchups
- BM strategies: Copper-dependent decks can't buy it.
- No-trasher boards: Coppers stay; can't unlock buys.
- Venture / Hovel boards needing Coppers: Strategic conflict.
- Heavy terminal collisions: Grand Market itself is non-terminal but support cards may collide.
Advanced Tips
You don't need to trash all Coppers — just keep Coppers off the table on the turn you want to buy Grand Market (use other +Coin sources, hold Coppers in hand or not draw them).
3-4 Grand Markets in deck = engine "everything-in-one" state. Combined Province multi-buy + deck thinning.
Black Market interaction: Both Grand Market and Black Market provide +1 Buy. Boards with both can over-saturate +Buy access; specialized engines emerge.
3-pile ending: Empty Grand Market pile (10/20 cards). With Province + Duchy + Grand Market gone, game ends suddenly.
