Blackjack Beginner's Guide | Rules, Card Values & Basic Strategy

Complete beginner's guide to blackjack. Learn the rules for reaching 21, card values, hit/stand/double down/split options, and the fundamentals of basic strategy.

What Is Blackjack?

Blackjack is a card game played one-on-one against a dealer. Your goal is to get a hand total as close to 21 as possible without going over — exceeding 21 is a "bust" and results in an immediate loss.

It's one of the most popular casino table games in the world. With simple rules and the use of basic strategy, the house edge can be reduced to under 0.5%, making it one of the most player-friendly casino games available.

Card Values

Card Value
2–9 Face value (2–9 points)
10, J, Q, K 10 points
A (Ace) 1 or 11 (whichever is more favorable)

When an Ace is counted as 11 without busting, that hand is called a soft hand (e.g., A+6 = Soft 17). If counting it as 11 would cause a bust, it's counted as 1 instead.

Round Structure

1. Place your bet
2. Each player and the dealer receive 2 cards
(Player: both face-up; Dealer: one face-up, one face-down)
3. Players choose their actions
4. Dealer reveals the hidden card and draws per house rules
5. Hands are compared and bets are settled

Player Actions

Action Description
Hit Draw one more card
Stand Keep your current total and end your turn
Double Down Double your bet and receive exactly one more card
Split If your first 2 cards are the same rank, split them into two separate hands (place an equal second bet)
Surrender Give up the hand after seeing your first 2 cards and recover half your bet (availability varies by casino)

Dealer Rules

Unlike players, the dealer follows fixed rules:

  • Total 16 or less: Must hit
  • Total 17 or more: Must stand
  • Soft 17 (A+6): Some casinos require a hit on soft 17 — check the table rules

Outcome Summary

Situation Result
Player busts (over 21) Player loses
Dealer busts Player wins
Player total > dealer total Player wins
Player total = dealer total Push — bet returned
Blackjack (A + 10-value card on first 2 cards) Pays 3:2 (typically)

Basic Strategy

Basic strategy is a chart that tells you the optimal action based on your hand total and the dealer's face-up card. Following it minimizes the house edge as much as possible.

Hard Hands (no Ace, or Ace counted as 1)

Your Total Recommended Action
8 or less Always hit
9 Double down if dealer shows 3–6; otherwise hit
10–11 Double down if your total exceeds dealer's card; otherwise hit
12 Stand if dealer shows 4–6; otherwise hit
13–16 Stand if dealer shows 2–6; hit if dealer shows 7 or higher
17 or more Always stand

Split Guidelines

Pair Recommendation
A-A Always split
8-8 Always split
10-10 Never split (20 is a strong hand)
5-5 Never split (treat as 10 for doubling purposes)
9-9 Split unless dealer shows 7, 10, or A

Blackjack Odds

  • Probability of a natural blackjack (first 2 cards): ~4.8%
  • House edge (typical rules): ~0.5% when using basic strategy
  • Without basic strategy: House edge can be 2–4%

A Note on Card Counting

Card counting is a technique for tracking the ratio of high-value to low-value cards remaining in the deck to identify favorable situations.

  • It is legal (no laws prohibit it)
  • Casinos can ban you from their premises (private property rules)
  • It requires significant practice and is not recommended for beginners

Start by mastering basic strategy before exploring advanced techniques.
