Introduction: How to Pick Your Character

In Guilty Gear -Strive-, picking a character you enjoy playing leads to faster improvement than picking the current meta top-tier. When you enjoy practicing, progress is natural.

This guide categorizes all characters by playstyle and provides recommendations for beginners and intermediate players.

Characters by Playstyle

Rushdown (Aggressive Close-Range)

Characters that want to get in your face and apply constant pressure.

Sol Badguy

  • Difficulty: ★☆☆
  • The tutorial character and game poster boy. Gun Flame controls space while you close the gap.
  • Strong at all levels of play, forgiving to execute for beginners.
  • Start here if you're new to the game.

Giovanna

  • Difficulty: ★☆☆
  • No projectiles or complex systems — just get in and attack.
  • Clean, simple gameplan with rewarding close-range pressure.

Leo Whitefang

  • Difficulty: ★★☆
  • Unique backward-stance system (Brynhildr Stance) adds a layer of offense unavailable to other characters.
  • Excellent mixup from stance, strong conversion damage.

Balanced (All-Rounder)

Versatile characters that work at multiple ranges.

Ky Kiske

  • Difficulty: ★☆☆
  • The definitive beginner-friendly balanced character. Stun Edge (projectile) and sword normals cover every range.
  • Best character for learning all of GGST's core systems.

May

  • Difficulty: ★☆☆
  • Dolphin summon (Mr. Dolphin) creates pressure and combo extensions.
  • Long reach and simple commands with top-tier damage output.
  • Still competitive at high levels following the Version 2.00 patch.

Ramlethal Valentine

  • Difficulty: ★★☆
  • Two swords can be deployed on screen to control space — a zoning-leaning balanced character.
  • Sword setup combos are visually spectacular and rewarding to learn.

Zoning (Spacing and Fireball Control)

Characters who control the screen with projectiles and long-range tools.

Axl Low

  • Difficulty: ★★☆
  • Exceptionally long range via chain attacks. Excels at keeping opponents out.
  • Great for learning spacing and screen control fundamentals.

Anji Mito

  • Difficulty: ★★☆
  • Fan-based attacks with a unique parry mechanic (Fuujin/Kou). Successful parries grant big reward.
  • Requires reading opponent behavior more than most characters.

Mixup (High-Low and Left-Right)

Characters who create ambiguous offensive situations.

Millia Rage

  • Difficulty: ★★★
  • Fast movement and hair-based set-play create extensive left-right and high-low mixups.
  • High execution ceiling but extremely rewarding at proficiency.

Chipp Zanuff

  • Difficulty: ★★★
  • Fastest movement in the game with teleport tools.
  • Very low health — high risk, high reward gameplay.

Grappler (Command Throw Focus)

Characters who punish passive defense with powerful command grabs.

Potemkin

  • Difficulty: ★★☆
  • Massive health pool and iconic Potemkin Buster command grab.
  • Has mid-range poke tools uncommon for grapplers, making him more accessible than typical grappler archetypes.

Character Selection Checklist

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Do you prefer offense or defense?

    • Offense → Rushdown (Sol, Giovanna)
    • Both → Balanced (Ky, May)
    • Defense / zoning → Axl
  2. How do you feel about execution complexity?

    • Keep it simple → Sol, Ky, Giovanna, May
    • Want unique mechanics → Leo, Potemkin, Anji
  3. Is there a character you connect with visually or thematically?

    • Character investment is a real driver of long-term practice motivation.
  4. Are you playing competitively long-term?

    • For competitive play, Version 2.00 upper-tier characters (Sol, May, Ky, Giovanna) are safe investments.

How to Try Multiple Characters

In training mode, run through each character's normals and two jump attacks before committing. The "does this feel good to press?" test is a valid selection criterion.

After matches, check your replay to see which characters you frequently face — trying those characters even briefly often reveals new appreciation for their design.

Summary

Playstyle Beginner Picks Description
Rushdown Sol, Giovanna Aggressive close-range
Balanced Ky, May All-rounder
