Ante Progression Guide

Required scores for Ante 1–8 and the exponential escalation of Endless Mode through Ante 24

Beginner 8 min read

The Three-Blind Structure

Each Ante in Balatro consists of three Blinds, each with a different score multiplier applied to the Ante's base target:

  • Small Blind: ×1.0 (lowest required score — can be skipped to earn a Tag)
  • Big Blind: ×1.5 (mid-tier required score — can also be skipped for a Tag)
  • Boss Blind: ×2.0 (highest required score, comes with a special debuff — cannot be skipped)

You must beat the Boss Blind's required score to advance to the next Ante.

Ante 1–8 Score Requirements

Ante Small Blind Big Blind Boss Blind
1 300 450 600
2 800 1,200 1,600
3 2,800 4,200 5,600
4 6,000 9,000 12,000
5 11,000 16,500 22,000
6 20,000 30,000 40,000
7 35,000 52,500 70,000
8 50,000 75,000 100,000

Beating the Ante 8 Boss Blind at 100,000 points is the standard ending goal of a Balatro run.

Strategic Tips by Phase

Early Game: Antes 1–2

Score requirements are low enough that you have breathing room. Use this phase to:

  • Decide on a primary hand type to build around (Flush, Straight, or a multiplier-based approach)
  • Secure at least 2–3 Jokers from the shop — even Common ones establish momentum
  • Avoid unnecessary rerolls and hold cash for interest ($5 per $5 held at round end)

Mid Game: Antes 3–4

Score requirements jump sharply — Ante 2 to Ante 3 is roughly a 3.5× increase. This is the most critical phase:

  • Lock in your core Joker synergy; unfocused decks will stall here
  • Buy powerful Vouchers if they appear — permanent upgrades compound throughout the run
  • Planet cards can close the gap if your primary hand falls behind in scaling

Upper Mid Game: Antes 5–6

Score scaling steadies relative to your build's output. If you have multiplicative Jokers (XMult sources), you should start feeling comfortable. On higher Stakes difficulty, these Antes can still be punishing:

  • Prioritize any remaining Joker slots — empty slots are lost potential
  • Watch for Spectral cards like Ectoplasm (+1 Joker slot) if your setup allows
  • Consider switching to a faster-scoring hand if your primary is underperforming

Late Game: Antes 7–8

The finish line is 100,000 points at Ante 8 Boss Blind. Key benchmarks:

  • Rule of thumb: If your Chips and Mult are each around 320, a single hand will reach 100,000 (√100,000 ≈ 316)
  • Use Small Blind skips to collect Tags and avoid unnecessary risk
  • Read the Boss Blind constraint before starting — some constraints (e.g., debuffing face cards or suits) can completely negate your build if you are unprepared

Endless Mode: Ante 9–24

After clearing Ante 8, you can choose to continue into Endless Mode. Score requirements escalate exponentially:

Ante Boss Blind Required Score
9 220,000
10 1,120,000
11 14,400,000
12 600,000,000
13 ~9.4 × 10¹⁰
14 ~5.8 × 10¹³
15 ~1.5 × 10¹⁷
16 ~1.7 × 10²¹

The jump between Antes 9 and 12 is already several orders of magnitude. From Ante 13 onward, the numbers exceed what can reasonably be expressed without scientific notation. Reaching high Antes in Endless Mode is endgame content reserved for top-tier optimized builds.

To push deep into Endless Mode you need:

  • Multiple stacking XMult Jokers (e.g., Blueprint + Brainstorm chaining XMult sources)
  • A hand type that can be played repeatedly for maximum output per round
  • Economy management that kept shop purchasing power high throughout the run

Small Blind Skip Strategy: When to Fight, When to Skip

Skipping the Small Blind (and sometimes the Big Blind) grants a Tag — a one-time bonus such as a free Joker, a double-size pack, or instant cash.

Skip when:

  • You are comfortable reaching the score — no chip-earning combat needed
  • The Tag on offer is high-value (free Rare Joker tag, Double Tag, etc.)
  • You want to preserve hand and discard counts for harder Blinds
  • You are in the late Antes and Tags help accelerate final scaling

Fight when:

  • A Joker slot is open and you need the money from card scoring
  • You are short on consumables and want a chance at shop-relevant rewards
  • The Tag offered has low value compared to what you could earn fighting

In general, aiming for Ante 8 completion means skipping liberally — Tags from Small Blind skips often provide more value than the cards you would play in the fight. However, if your economy is weak going into a pivotal shop, fighting the Small Blind can provide just enough income to afford a key purchase.
