Scoring Mechanics

Complete breakdown of Chips×Mult, XMult stacking, enhancements, editions, and seals

The Core Scoring Formula

Every score in Balatro resolves to this formula:

Final Score = (Base Chips + Added Chips) × (Base Mult + Added Mult) × XMult₁ × XMult₂ × …

Chips and Mult grow through addition (+); XMult (multiplicative multipliers) stack through multiplication (×). Stacking multiple XMults causes score to scale exponentially.

Chips

Chips are the sum of Base Chips and Added Chips.

What makes up Base Chips

  1. The hand's base chip value (e.g. Flush = 35)
  2. The rank value of every scoring card (cards that contribute to the hand)

Card rank values:

Rank Chips
2–9 Equal to the face value (2=2, …, 9=9)
10 10
J / Q / K 10
A 11

Main sources of Added Chips

  • Bonus Card enhancement: +30 Chips when scored
  • Stone Card enhancement: Always scores +50 Chips regardless of hand (no suit or rank)
  • Chip-granting jokers: Fixed or conditional +Chips from various jokers

Mult

Mult is the sum of Base Mult and Added Mult.

What makes up Base Mult

The hand's base Mult value (e.g. Flush = 4).

Main sources of Added (+) Mult

  • Mult Card enhancement: +4 Mult when scored
  • Lucky Card enhancement: 1 in 5 chance for +20 Mult
  • Additive-mult jokers: Various jokers that add a flat Mult value

XMult (Multiplicative Multiplier)

XMult is applied to the current Mult as a multiplier. Multiple XMult values stack by multiplication and create exponential scaling.

Main sources of XMult

  • Glass Card enhancement: X2 when scored (1 in 4 chance to destroy the card)
  • Steel Card enhancement: X1.5 while this card remains in hand (no need to play it)
  • Polychrome edition (joker): X1.5
  • Holographic edition (joker): +10 Mult (additive, not XMult)
  • Foil edition (joker): +50 Chips (additive)
  • XMult jokers: Many jokers grant X multipliers under various conditions

Evaluation Order and Joker Placement

Scoring resolves in this order:

  1. Played cards evaluated left to right (Chips and Mult added)
  2. In-hand cards evaluated (Steel Cards and other hand-dependent effects)
  3. Jokers evaluated left to right

Joker placement order matters: placing +Mult jokers to the left of XMult jokers amplifies their contribution.

Example: A joker giving +100 Mult placed to the left of a ×3 XMult joker means the +100 is then multiplied by ×3. Reversing the order gives no amplification of the +100.

Card Modifier Evaluation Order

When a single card has an enhancement, a seal, and an edition, they resolve in this order:

Enhancement → Seal → Edition

Example — Mult Card vs. Glass Card order:

  • Left: Mult Card (+4) → Right: Glass Card (×2): the +4 from Mult Card is doubled by Glass Card.
  • Left: Glass Card (×2) → Right: Mult Card (+4): ×2 applies to base Mult only; +4 is added afterward without amplification.

Enhancement Reference

Enhancement Effect
Bonus Card +30 Chips when scored
Mult Card +4 Mult when scored
Wild Card Counts as any suit
Glass Card ×2 Mult when scored (1 in 4 chance to break)
Steel Card ×1.5 Mult while held in hand
Stone Card Always scores +50 Chips; has no suit or rank
Gold Card +$3 at end of round if held in hand
Lucky Card 1 in 5: +20 Mult; 1 in 15: +$20

Edition Reference

Editions attach to jokers or playing cards and add permanent effects.

Edition Effect
Foil +50 Chips
Holographic +10 Mult
Polychrome ×1.5 Mult
Negative +1 Joker slot (joker only)

Seal Reference

Seal Effect
Gold Seal +$3 when scored
Red Seal Triggers card one additional time
Blue Seal Creates the corresponding Planet card when discarded from hand at round end
Purple Seal Creates the corresponding Tarot card when discarded from hand at round end

Guidelines for Maximising Score

  1. Prioritise XMult above all: multiplication beats addition exponentially. Lean into Glass, Steel, and Polychrome jokers.
  2. Apply +Mult before XMult: arrange jokers so flat-Mult sources sit to the left of XMult sources.
  3. Plasma Deck equalises Chips and Mult: pushing either stat exclusively still pays off, changing normal strategy.
  4. Know card evaluation order: the sequence in which you play cards can change the final score.
  5. Level up your main hand with Planet cards: concentrated investment raises the scoring floor significantly.
