Effect and Behavior

Night Sword is a DLC weapon found as a field pickup on Mt. Moonspell stage. It strikes nearby enemies with a multi-hit consecutive slash pattern. Damage is affected by the Greed stat (coin collection bonus), and each attack activation consumes the player's HP. Additionally, it retaliates when the player takes damage — dealing bonus damage to enemies proportional to Greed — and has a chance to steal hearts from defeated enemies to recover HP.

  • Automatically targets nearby enemies and lands multiple hits per activation
  • Each activation consumes a fixed amount of player HP
  • Higher Greed increases both base damage and retaliation bonus damage
  • Being hit triggers a retaliation burst; Greed amplifies how hard this hits
  • Killing enemies has a random chance to steal a heart, recovering player HP

Evolution

Hold Stone Mask, level Night Sword to MAX, then open a treasure chest after 10:00 (evolved form name to be confirmed).

Stone Mask also raises the Greed stat, so taking it as an evolution material simultaneously boosts Night Sword's retaliation damage.

Strengths

  • Multi-hit attack pattern efficiently converts Might into high total damage per activation
  • Greed stacking raises both base damage and retaliation damage simultaneously — self-contained scaling
  • Retaliation mechanic returns damage even in dense enemy situations, rewarding being in the thick of combat
  • Heart steal can offset the HP cost of attacking, providing occasional HP sustain

Weaknesses

  • HP cost per activation gradually drains health — low Recovery makes this dangerous over time
  • Short range; cannot reach distant enemies effectively
  • Heart steal is probabilistic — relying on it as the primary HP recovery method is risky
  • Greed investment can crowd out other stat priorities in a build

Recommended Characters

Moonspell DLC characters who start in or frequently visit Mt. Moonspell can pick up the sword from the field easily. Characters with high starting Greed or built-in HP recovery synergize particularly well.

Recommended Passives

Passive Reason
Stone Mask Evolution material; raises Greed, directly increasing retaliation and base damage
Pummarola Recovery boost offsets the ongoing HP cost of attacking
Spinach Might increase improves damage per HP spent
Tiragisú Revive provides a safety net against HP mismanagement
Attractorb Pulls enemies into melee range to increase multi-hit contact rate

Recommended Arcana

Arcana Effect
IV - Awake Enhances on-kill effects, amplifying heart steal benefits
XIII - Wicked Season Global stat increase compounds Greed scaling and all damage output

Gameplay Tips

Prioritize Stone Mask first — it simultaneously secures the evolution material and raises Greed, which directly increases Night Sword's damage ceiling. The more Stone Masks you accumulate, the stronger the retaliation hits.

Manage HP cost by investing in Pummarola or relying partially on heart steal procs. A single Tiragisú significantly reduces the risk of losing a run to HP drain — consider it a necessary safety net in dedicated Night Sword builds.

The retaliation mechanic rewards deliberate positioning in the middle of enemy groups. In high-density situations, allowing a few controlled hits to trigger retaliation bursts can be more effective than avoiding damage entirely — just don't let the combined HP cost and enemy damage spiral out of control.

FAQ

Q. Where is Night Sword found? A. It appears as a field item on the Mt. Moonspell stage in the Moonspell DLC. It is not unlocked through a character — you must physically pick it up during a run.

Q. Can the HP cost be avoided? A. No — the cost is inherent to each activation. It can be mitigated by stacking Recovery with Pummarola or by landing heart steal procs from kills.

Q. How much Greed should I stack? A. Multiple Stone Masks compound Greed significantly. Since Stone Mask is the evolution material, collecting extras beyond the required one continues to raise Greed, so more is generally better for a Night Sword build.
