Rating & Analysis

Magic Deck is the premier "Tarot-axis" starter — three consumable slots from turn one and two Tarots in the bank before you play your first hand. As soon as you clear the first Small Blind you can spend on Tarot Merchant or another Planet/Tarot to keep the consumable engine fed, which means a "consumables-as-damage" plan is online from Ante 1.

The Fool regenerates the last Tarot/Planet you used, and Magic Deck starts with two of them. That alone enables a Magician → The Fool → Magician chain in Ante 1. The build truly explodes the moment you find Black Hole or The Soul: use the spectral, regenerate it with The Fool, use it again — every Ante stacks permanent +1 to every hand level. This is one of Balatro's strongest permanent scaling lines, and it's available as a starter perk.

Cartomancer / Fortune Teller / Perkeo are the dream Jokers here. Perkeo in particular turns the Fool loop into a Negative-copy factory: the consumables you regenerate get duplicated outside your slots forever. Most community tier lists rank Magic Deck alongside Zodiac Deck for the highest-stake completion rate, and the reason is precisely how fast its scaling ceiling lifts.

Rating by Stake

Stake Rating Comment
White / Red S+ The Fool loop builds itself — fastest path to win runs.
Green S+ Scaling chip requirements are easily covered by permanent Black Hole stacks.
Black S Eternal Jokers can lock weak picks, but the Tarot plan is naturally Joker-light.
Blue S -1 discard barely matters — your damage comes from consumables, not hand selection.
Purple / Orange A+ You want Black Hole locked in by Ante 4 to keep up with the score curve.
Gold A Rental Joker upkeep eats the economy; prioritize Tarot Merchant early.

Good Joker Synergies

Joker Why
Perkeo Negative-copies a Fool-regenerated Tarot — slot-free permanent stash.
Cartomancer Free Tarot per Blind selection, eating into your three-slot capacity productively.
Fortune Teller +1 Mult per Tarot used — Magic Deck spends Tarots faster than any other deck.
Magician Lucky-fies the first scored card per hand. Stacks with Fool re-use.
Blueprint / Brainstorm Copies Cartomancer or Perkeo for double output per shop/blind.
Astronomer Free Planet packs feed the consumable pipeline beyond Tarots alone.

Recommended Builds

Black Hole Permanence Fool → Black Hole → Fool regen → Black Hole again Black Hole
Perkeo Negative Loop Fool generates a Tarot → Perkeo turns it Negative on shop exit Black Hole / The Soul / The Fool
Fortune Teller Scaling Cartomancer + Fortune Teller, spam Tarots for +1 Mult per use Any Tarot
Magician Lucky-Card Magician lucky-fies a card → Fool re-uses Magician → enhancement multiplies Magician / High Priestess

Tips & Usage

  • First-shop priority is Tarot Merchant or the Crystal Ball upgrade (Omen Globe). One of those should be in hand by end of Ante 1.
  • Do not instantly use Black Hole when you find it. Keep a Fool in your slot, fire the Black Hole, regenerate it, and start the permanence loop.
  • When pairing with Perkeo, exit the shop holding only the Tarot you want to copy. Holding multiple consumables makes the Negative target random.
  • Treat The Soul as a top-priority pickup. Magic Deck doesn't have natural Spectral access, so each Soul drop is precious.
  • Voucher path: Crystal Ball → Omen Globe → Astronomer → Tarot Merchant → Tarot Tycoon is a stable progression.

Caveats

  • No direct +1 Joker / +1 hand bonus. Antes 1–2 can feel low-damage if your Joker pickups are bad.
  • The Fool regenerates only the most recent consumable. Burning multiple Tarots in one shop wipes out earlier targets.
  • A Boss Blind hit before Black Hole is locked in can derail the run — keep at least one strong hand level early.
  • Eternal The Fool stays useful (effect still applies); Perishable is fine since The Fool isn't a scaling Joker.
