Clunkmasters Complete Strategy — Clunkers × Charms
This guide focuses on the interaction between Clunkers and Charms — the most overlooked dimension of Clunkmaster play. Charms equipped to Clunkers are never copied in the Eye of the Storm final battle, making them the safest place to invest your best Charms.
Why Clunkers are the ideal Charm targets
Three reasons Clunkers beat companions for Charm investment:
- No copy in final boss: Enemy copies in Eye of the Storm only duplicate companion cards. Charms on Clunkers stay yours alone.
- Scrap absorption: Even if a charmed Clunker gets targeted, it only loses 1 Scrap per hit — the Charm stays active much longer than on a companion.
- Reaction triggers: Many Clunkers fire automatically on conditions (ally attacks, Snow hits, etc.), so a Charm's effect multiplies over the entire fight without costing extra actions.
The Critical mechanic — Clunkmaster exclusive
Critical doubles a card's effect when it is the rightmost card in your hand.
- Any item with Critical in your hand: position it last deliberately.
- Critical Charm can grant Critical to any card — including non-Clunkmaster cards.
- Critical doubles the base value of the effect; Lumin/Lumin Vase then further multiplies the already-doubled value.
Critical + Charm combinations worth building around
| Card | Charm to add | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Frenzy Wrench (base x1 Frenzy) | Critical Charm | x2 Frenzy — turns any unit into a multi-hit engine |
| Bom Barrel (base 4 Weakness) | Critical Charm | 8 Weakness in one play |
| Bom Barrel | Critical + Lumin Charm | 8 Weakness then further boosted — one-shots bosses |
| Sunsong Box (base Recycle 2) | Critical Charm | Recycle 4 — clears hand Junk immediately |
| Blaze Bomb (x1 Frenzy + 4 Weakness) | Critical Charm | x2 Frenzy + 8 Weakness on the same card |
Key insight: Critical is calculated on the base value before any Lumin multiplier. Stack in order: Critical first (doubles base), then Lumin Charm/Vase (multiplies the result).
Best Charm-on-Clunker combinations
Lumin Charm on Gachaponker
Gachaponker gives Barrage to all same-row allies. Lumin Charm does nothing here — Barrage is binary. Instead:
Better choice: Noomlin Charm on Gachaponker.
Noomlin lets you play a card without spending your action. Since Gachaponker fires as a reaction whenever a row-ally attacks, the Noomlin Charm lets you also play a hand card in the same moment. Effectively, every enemy turn that triggers Gachaponker gives you a free card play.
Sun Charm on Krono
Krono applies x1 Frenzy to all non-Crowned allies. Sun Charm reduces Counter by 1, making Krono fire one turn faster. Combine with:
- Zoomlin Nest: drawn companions trigger instantly, so a faster Krono means every drawn companion immediately becomes a Frenzy machine.
- Tooting Accordion: spend 1 Scrap to trigger a random ally — fire the ally whose counter you want to reset early.
Frenzy Charm on Mimic / Mega Mimic
Mimic fires as a reaction when a row-ally attacks. Adding Frenzy Charm to Mimic itself makes Mimic hit multiple times per reaction trigger. At x3 Frenzy + ATK 2 per reaction, a single ally attack can deal 6 bonus damage passively.
Scrap Charm on Heartforge / Spike Wall
Scrap Charm grants an extra starting Scrap. On tanky Clunkers like Heartforge (Scrap 5) or Spike Wall (Scrap 4), this extends their lifespan by 1 extra hit — in a Scrap→Junk pipeline, that extra hit means one more Junk when the Clunker eventually dies.
Smackback (Punchfist) Charm on Teeth Box
Teeth Box already reflects received damage to attackers. Punchfist Charm adds Smackback — hits back whenever attacked. Combine both and any physical attacker targeting Teeth Box receives the reflected damage plus the Smackback hit, effectively tripling the punishment. High-damage enemies become self-defeating.
Lumin Charm on Shell-minator
Shell-minator doubles Shroom applied to enemies (costs 1 Scrap). Lumin Charm doubles the doubling — Shroom output goes 2× → 4× normal. With Fungo Gun transferring Shroom to new targets on kill, the entire enemy row accumulates Shroom exponentially.
Clunker positioning guide (Charm-aware)
| Row position | Best Clunker type | Recommended Charm |
|---|---|---|
| Front (takes hits) | Teeth Box, Shroom Bomb | Punchfist, Lumin |
| Middle (buff aura) | Mobile Campfire, Krono | Sun, Noomlin |
| Back (reaction) | Gachaponker, Mimic | Noomlin, Frenzy |
| Flexible | Blunder Tank | Lumin (doubles Junk-destroy reaction ATK) |
Junk/Scrap loop — step by step
The Clunkmaster win condition is converting a Junk-clogged hand into massive one-turn damage:
- Load Scrap: Alloy attacks → all row-Clunkers gain Scrap. Equip Scrap Charm on key Clunkers for extra starting Scrap.
- Generate Junk: When a Clunker's Scrap runs out it dies, dropping Junk into your hand. Junk Head Clunker (on-hit) also generates Junk without dying.
- Recycle for damage: Portable Workbench (reduces Recycle cost by 1) + Sunsong Box / Frenzy Wrench with Critical Charm → Recycle 4 at once. Each Recycle converts Junk into direct damage or Frenzy stacks.
- Frenzy payoff: Route Frenzy onto Mini Mika or a Weakness-stacked target. Blaze Bomb with Critical Charm (8 Weakness) turns every subsequent Frenzy hit into a death sentence for the boss.
Advanced: Noomlin loop
Noomlin Charm on any item that generates more Junk creates a soft infinite loop:
- Play Junk-Head-triggering item (free via Noomlin) → enemy attacks Junk Head → Junk in hand → Recycle Junk for damage → repeat.
This requires Portable Workbench in play to keep Recycle cost at 0. Extremely high skill ceiling; inconsistent without both pieces, but unbeatable when assembled.
Charm acquisition tips
- Charm Merchant events: always prioritize Lumin Charm, Noomlin Charm, and Sun Charm — tri-universally strong across all Clunkmaster builds.
- Treasure chests on the map: Scrap Charm and Frenzy Charm frequently appear; pick Scrap Charm first if your Clunker count is 3+.
- Boss rewards: Critical Charm tends to appear after Act 2 boss. If you have a Junk-payoff item to double, this is the highest-ceiling reward in the run.
- Don't charm Junk cards: Junk itself is not a target for Charms. The only use of Junk is as Recycle fuel; no Charm can make Junk good.
Storm level scaling notes
Higher Storm levels (5+) introduce:
- Enemies with Frenzy → devastating against Scrap 1 Clunkers. Keep Sunglasses Chime in play to wipe Frenzy enemy counters simultaneously before they fire.
- Emperor Shade's Frost Junker mechanic: destroys rightmost hand card each turn. Keep Critical-enhanced Recycle items in the middle of your hand, not the rightmost slot.
- Increased boss HP thresholds → Critical Charm on Blaze Bomb (8 Weakness) + Mini Mika Frenzy train becomes mandatory, not optional.
