Vambrace doubles the Block from the first card that grants Block in each combat. It hugely strengthens turn-1 defense and cuts early damage. By leading with a high-Block card, you can effectively lock down a turn with just one defense play. The catch: it fires only once per combat and contributes nothing after that. Ensuring a high-Block card is in your opening hand (with bottle relics, for example) maximizes its value.
