Like Wound, Soot is a simple hand-clogging Status with no effect beyond being unplayable. It just reduces your hand size by one on the turn you draw it, with no damage or debuff attached. Because it isn't Ethereal, it cycles back into your deck after being discarded, but it's removed automatically after combat ends. Among Statuses, it ranks as one of the least harmful, and rarely requires dedicated counterplay. Only if massive amounts pile up does the hand pressure become an issue, and even then Evolve or Fire Breathing can convert it into a benefit.

Sources and Related Enemies

  • Added to your deck mid-combat by soot- and flame-themed monsters, typically enemies built around smoke or ash
  • A common, widely used basic Status, similar in role to Wound
  • Status cards exist only during combat and are removed automatically after combat ends

Counterplay and Play Pattern

  • No special counter needed since it carries no extra effect; simply tank it
  • Medical Kit: lets you play Status cards to Exhaust them. Not really worth using on something as mild as Soot
  • Evolve (Ironclad): draws a card each time you draw Soot, recouping the hand loss
  • Only problematic in large quantities; defeating the enemy that applies it is the practical solution

Good Synergies

  • Evolve (Ironclad): extra draw whenever a Status is drawn, turning Soot into a draw engine
  • Fire Breathing (Ironclad): deals damage to all enemies when a Status is drawn, turning Soot into an attack source
  • Medical Kit: play Soot to Exhaust it. Useful only when the deck is flooded with Soot
  • Feel No Pain (Ironclad): gain Block when Soot is Exhausted via Medical Kit
