Kernel
Basic Info
- Tribe: Snowdwellers
- Attack: 3
- HP: 8
- Counter: 4
- Effect: When hit, apply 2 Shell to ally behind
Rating
A-tier defensive cornerstone. Kernel does one thing: every time he takes a hit, the ally directly behind him gains 2 Shell. With reliable 8 HP and decent 3 Attack, he works comfortably as a front-liner while passively armoring whatever fragile piece you park behind him. He doesn't scale explosively and won't carry fights on his own, but in a tribe that depends on Yuki and Chompom surviving long enough to snowball, Kernel is often the reason they do.
How to Use
Put Kernel in the front row, always. His effect is positional and automatic — no activation required. The ally directly behind him receives 2 Shell each time Kernel is struck. High-attack enemies who hit multiple times per turn turn his slot into a Shell factory.
The ally behind Kernel is the most critical positioning decision. Yuki (1 HP) is the primary beneficiary: Shell stacks prevent one-shots, letting her scale Attack freely. Chompom gains Attack from each Shell received, so Kernel's tanking directly grows Chompom's damage. Fulbert converts received Shell into Shroom on enemies, turning passive tanking into active board control.
Leave Kernel mostly uncharm'd beyond HP increases. More HP means more hits absorbed, which means more Shell distributed. Lumin Ring is the one charm that changes his value — it boosts Shell per hit from 2 to 3.
Advanced Techniques
HP charms extend his window. Each additional HP point is a potential extra Shell application to his back-row partner. Prioritize HP-up charms on Kernel before offensive charms.
Lumin Ring is the best single charm upgrade. It pushes his per-hit output from 2 Shell to 3 Shell. Against multi-hit enemies, this difference compounds quickly.
Kernel does not give himself Shell. Only the ally directly behind benefits. Kernel himself remains vulnerable to burst damage, so supplement him with a healing source or a secondary front-liner if the run demands it.
Watch AoE fights. Against enemies whose attacks hit all front-row units, Kernel's front-row positioning still benefits the back row, but he'll take AoE hits on top of targeted hits, draining his HP faster than usual.
Good Synergy Cards & Charms
- Yuki — place her directly behind Kernel; Shell stacks prevent one-shots and let her Attack snowball safely
- Chompom — gains Attack from each Shell received; Kernel's passive generation turns Chompom into a growing damage threat
- Fulbert — converts received Shell into Shroom on enemies; Kernel's tanking becomes offensive pressure automatically
- Shelly — additional Shell support; combining both creates near-permanent Shell uptime on the back row
- HP-up charms on Kernel — more HP means more hits absorbed, means more Shell for the back-row ally
- Lumin Ring — boosts Shell per hit from 2 to 3; the best charm upgrade on Kernel
