Rating
A-tier carry with summon-engine dependency. Van Jun does nothing in isolation but becomes a game-winning aura when your run has consistent summon output. Every ally that enters the battlefield while Van Jun is on board receives a permanent +2 Attack and +2 HP — this is not temporary. A single run through the Chikichi chain (5 Shades) under Van Jun's effect generates 5 permanent buffs, meaning each successive Shade appears stronger than the last. Skull Mist Tea turns any sacrificed unit into both a payoff trigger and a Van Jun buff opportunity simultaneously.
The community accurately describes her ceiling: even sacrificing a basic minion with Skull Mist Tea in play while Van Jun is on board gives every remaining ally a permanent +3 Attack. At that point Van Jun has functionally won the combat math.
How to Use
Van Jun requires two inputs: a way to keep her alive, and a summon engine. Without summons, she provides only her own 4 Attack on Counter 0 (Reaction-type, not a timed counter). With summons, she's an aura that multiplies across the entire fight.
The survival problem is real. 4 HP makes her fragile. Place her in the back row and protect her with Shell or healing. A dead Van Jun stops generating buffs permanently; losing her mid-fight is a significant tempo loss.
Summon sources that work with her: Chikichi's sacrifice chain (5 summon triggers), Spoof (copies enemies, generating summon triggers), Fallow (spawns Shades periodically), and any Shade Clay or other summon-on-play cards. The more summons fire while Van Jun is alive, the larger the cumulative buff stack becomes.
With Skull Mist Tea in hand and Van Jun on board, the play pattern becomes: sacrifice a weak ally → that sacrificed unit's departure triggers a buff on the newly summoned replacement → the replacement arrives stronger than base stats. Two or three Skull Mist Tea uses can balloon ally stats by +6 to +9 Attack each before the fight resolves.
Advanced Techniques
Crown Van Jun if the run allows. Counter 0 means she's always active when on the board, but crowning ensures she starts in play from turn one without hand management. Every summon in the opening turns is buffed.
The Chikichi chain under Van Jun is exponential. Chikichi → Chikani (+2/+2) → sacrifice Chikani → Chikasan (+2/+2 on top of the previous buff) and so on. By the fourth or fifth link, the Shade appears with 6–10 bonus Attack and HP stacked from repeated Van Jun triggers.
Lumin Ring on Van Jun. With Lumin Ring, the buff per summon becomes +3 Attack and +3 HP instead of +2/+2. Three Skull Mist Tea uses at +3/+3 each push allies into numbers that clear most Act 3 content without further investment.
Protect Van Jun above all else. Shell, Berries, healing items — all spent on Van Jun are worth it. Each hit point Van Jun survives is another potential summon activation waiting to happen.
Good Synergy Cards & Charms
- Skull Mist Tea — sacrifice trigger that simultaneously fires a summon, giving any alive ally a permanent +2/+2 buff on the spot
- Chikichi — the sacrifice chain produces 5 summons total; Van Jun turns this into 5 separate +2/+2 buff events
- Spoof — copies enemies on play; each copy is a summon trigger
- HP-up charms on Van Jun — extending her survivability is more valuable than any offensive investment
- Lumin Ring on Van Jun — pushes buffs from +2/+2 to +3/+3 per summon
